Apstrakt

This study examines the oeuvre of István Németh, a Hungarian publicist and writer of short prose in Délvidék, with particular attention to his rural-themed reports and writings on the Drávaszög region. It explores how journalistic practice serves as a tool for literarily ambitious sociographic depictions, enriching social reporting with historical elements. This study analyzes Németh István’s minority-centered, empathetic perspective, which brings the everyday lives, fates, and values of rural communities on the periphery to the forefront. It highlights genre boundary-crossings and the bridging role between publicistic writing and belles-lettres. The study emphasizes the significance of empathy, mutual understanding, and authentic voice, while also noting that these writings document key communal experiences of minority existence. Thus, Németh István’s work can be regarded as a rigorous social and historical chronicle and a significant source for the cultural memory of Délvidék.
