Abstract

This paper aims to examine three works by Victor Segalen that belong to the Polynesian cycle: selected excerpts from Essai sur l’exotisme: une esthétique du Divers, Penser Païens and La Marche du feu. The objective is to analyse them and to explain the concept of exoticism through Segalen’s aesthetics. The study will focus on the exploration of the concepts of ‘Self’ and ‘Other’, and on Segalen’s innovative view of Polynesian culture.
